Shirt Dresses: Retro to Metro

This spring, the fashion world is once again in love with 1950s fashion. In the stores and online, I’m seeing 50s-style floral prints dresses, full skirts, gingham shirts, and more. It’s pre-Beatlemania styling! Personally, I’m getting a huge kick out of the return of the 1950s shirtwaist dress. The dresses have the classic styling—the collar, the button front, the belt or tie—you’d expect, but they've been updated with this season's favorite prints and colors. Take, for instance, the Jones New York Safari Shirt Dress ($119). It's a great choice for women over 50 because it's easy, comfortable and flatters the over 50 figure, which benefits from a little structure. Tops Over 50: Go Figure!

I don't know about you, but my figure isn't what it was 10 years ago. My weight is about the same, but my shape definitely isn't. I've gone from an imperfect hourglass to a very ripe old pear shape. When I first noticed my shape shifting, I wanted to hide under boxy or baggy clothing. But unless you're shaped like a pencil, baggy tops and bottoms only make your figure look much worse. Every other body shape--apple, pear, hourglass and womanly--benefit from a little structure. Take, for instance, the Jones New York Tie Front Ruffle Blouse (was $89, now $69) above. Color Crazed Spring Flats

I'm going to Paris this spring and would rather save my money for shopping there then here. (Have you entered my $25 Amazon.com Gift Certificate Giveaway? Just click here and tell me what I should pack for Paris.) Still, I do need a few things, like comfortable footwear. This weekend, a bunch of shoe sites are having sales, so I decided to see what was available online. I started out looking for sensible walking shoes, but was instantly distracted by the many lovely spring flats in gorgeous colors. We got off easy weather-wise this winter in the Northeast, but still, I'm ready for spring and its fresh colors. Here's sample of flats in daffodil yellow, tulip purple, and new grass green. Not all the styles are on sale and one or two might require a splurge. But most, like the Anne Klein Seana Casual Flat ($69) above, are well-priced or even low-priced (under $25). They make this over 50 woman want to pull out her white Capris or white jean skirt and put on a pair.

The Blonds Ambition

I can't remember the last time I had as much fun being the proverbial fly on the wall as I did at the recent Blonds runway show during the Fall 2012 Fashion Week in New York City. Here's a few snapshots of the proceedings.

The show, which was staged at the trendy Milk Studio in Chelsea, attracted a colorful cross-section of the fashion world and downtown New York night life, including rapper Lil Kim. Whipped up hairdos, heavy eye make up, tattoos galore, and ski-tight dresses and corsets were de rigueur for both sexes. I was impressed with how many of the guests had platinum blonde dos, as if to show solidarity with the designers.

Long before the show started, cameras were flashing madly as the crowd sauntered through the doors and mingled along the runway. Everyone seemed delighted to have their picture taken. Unfortunately, I had dashed from work to the show and forgotten my camera (talk about senior moments--ugh!). I took this next photo with my rinky-dink cell phone. See the man with the platinum blonde spikes? He was accompanied by a woman with a Jean Harlow hairdo (to his blurry left). The couple looked like Neptune and his wife Amphitrite, statuesque and topless (she wore tasseled pasties) with long, slitted, black skirts. Another personal favorite was a man in a tiny bowler hat jauntily tilted to one side of his forehead.

Once the models began to strut down the runway it seemed clear what had drawn Lil Kim and the others: The Phillipe and David Blond's 2012 fall collection isn't exactly ready for 9 to 5. Using classic motorcycle fashions as a springboard for the collection, the designers created men's jackets and women's corsets dripping with colorful embroidery, icy crystals, and glittery mesh and leopard skin prints. The female models also wore motorcycle helmets with long, blonde pony tails flowing down their backs. There were a couple of glittery non-corset garments--a skirt suit, dress and jumpsuit--but even those were a little over-the-top for women of a certain age. No, this wild and whimsy collection is best suited to those planning their fall 2012 music tour or next big top appearance.

While I enjoyed my first runway show immensely, I couldn't help noticing the glaring differences between the male and female models. Here, take a look...

The first thing (and which you can't tell from the photos) is the difference in the way these two models moved down the runway. The man's outfit was designed for being active, moving around easily. By contrast, that dress was super confining. I witnessed first-hand how difficult it was for the female model to maneuver the runway. I don't think I was alone in finding it painful to watch.

I accept that garments look best when they flow over statuesque bodies with long legs. And the whole anorexic model business has been covered plenty. But what I don't get is why the fashion world's vision of female beauty is the human coat hanger, while it's vision of male beauty is the chiseled Greek god--glowing skin, well-fed, though, perhaps, a little over-exercised. Not only are the female models super thin and pale skinned, but it seems their instructed to strike lifeless, affectless poses. I just don't understand why male and female designers would slave to create such beautiful clothing for women and then present their designs on figures that are a hollow, haunted facsimile of the female form.

But...I don't want to end on a depressing note. Instead, let me share one last photo of my favorite guest at the show. She is my fashion ideal--confident and individual.

Quick! Old Navy Jeggings On Sale

It's Presidents' Weekend and you know what that means: Sales, sales, and more sales!! So this morning, while sipping my coffee, I roamed the web and noticed that Old Navy has put its black Old Navy Womens The Rock Star Super-Skinny Denim Leggings on sale--were $34.94, now $19.00. Don't let the silly name put you off. I bought two pairs of these jeggings this season and I'm practically living in them--especially the black ones (pictured above). I love them because they're...

Super soft and comfortable. The waistband is at my hips. (I'm so done with anything attacking my waist.) I wear them over dresses, so hip-hugging isn't a problem. And they're stretchy, so even though they're "super-skinny jeans," they aren't confining.
A great alternative to tights. I can toss them in the washing machine, so it gives me a break from all the hand washing I do with tights. They're much warmer than tights on icy days. And I don't have to worry about runs.
Flattering. My calves, which are average at best, look thinner in jeggings than in leggings. When I wear leggings, my legs look like a thicker version of me in tights. But jeggings make my legs look thinner than they usually do in pants. Does that make sense?

SIZING TIPS
At posting time, the jeggings were available in all sizes, including Tall and Petite sizes. I bought the Old Navy jeggings in one size bigger than I usually do for pants. I don't have the greatest legs (to say the least) and, despite the jegging's stretchiness, I thought I'd be more comfortable with a little extra room. Plus, they are cotton, so I was worried about shrinkage. So far, no signs of shrinkage. If you'd like to check them out, click on the photo below. It will take you directly to the page. F/W 2012: Bright Lights, Long Legs

It's Fashion Week in New York. In the past, I've only viewed the event from afar, watching a few runway shows streamed live on the web. While there are lots of shows--90 fashion shows at Lincoln Center plus roughly 250 shows scattered around the city--they all require an invitation. This year, I had the good fortune of getting two invitations! My son, a design student and photographer for Style Alternative, was my guide. The first show, a presentation of Mathieu Mirano's Fall 2012 collection at Lincoln Center, was last Sunday. Here's a few photos we snapped at the event.

I arrived at Lincoln Center before my son and got a chance to take in the scene outside the David H. Koch Theater. A fashion show must have ended recently, because there was a steady flow of super tall, skinny, very made-up, young women leaving the building. I wasn't the only one milling about outdoors. There was a small pack of paparazzi, cameras in hand, ready to pounce as soon as a model pushed through the glass doors. The photographers were like football players chasing a fumbled ball, muscling in on each other, angling for the best shot of the models. There were also a few young women, who I suspect were bloggers like myself. At least I assume they were bloggers because they weren't as aggressive as the professional photographers.

When my son arrive, we went inside. It was a typical event scene, including large screens showing runway shows and product booths.

The Mirano presentation was held in a tent with high-ceilings, dark around the perimeter, but glaringly bright in the center, where the models stood on a tiered stage. Being a Fashion Week novice, I didn't realize that some collections are shown in a presentation format, rather than a runway. My son says the advantage is that it gives photographers a chance to zoom in on garment details--as opposed to grabbing shots of models in motion on the runways.

Once again, there were photographers angling for the best shots of the models, but without, thank goodness, the zeal of linebackers. In fact, everyone was very polite. And everyone was checking out everyone, even me. I had to laugh. You know how women of a certain age feel invisible in society? Not so at fashion shows. Since these events are invitation only, everyone assumes you must be somebody. People looked at little old me and I could tell they were thinking (for a brief moment, anyway): Is she someone I know? Is she someone I should know?

The Mirano 2012 fall collection consisted largely of skirt suits, evening dresses and gowns. I liked it a lot, but then, I'm drawn to classic styling with a few unexpected details. I also like feminine suits. Zippers, fur, extra pockets and folds make it clear that these suits are not for men.

I had to take this next photo. If you're wondering why the models look so grim in the other snapshots, maybe it's the heels they're wearing. The New York Times calls the runway model look the "coolly robotic Eastern European beauty ideal," but I call it sad. I actually liked many of the Marino designs, but it didn't look like the models did. They look miserable, don't they? I get most of my styling ideas from observing other women. I don't remember ever thinking: "I love that woman's grim look!" Instead, I admire women who look happy and confident in what they're wearing.

One of my 2012 fashion resolutions is to find comfortable dresses to wear over leggings or jeggings. I love the look because it hides my less-than-flattering thighs. And leggings/jeggings are warm like tights, but can be thrown in the washing machine. (I hate hand-washing tights!) This week, I bought the Max Studio jersey dress shown above (though not online). The v-neck is a little low for me, but that’s okay. I’m used to adding a camisole or little pin to avoid exposing cleavage or worse. (I seem to have a short chest or something.) I love to lounge. I know people who are constantly on the run, but not me. I need time to kick back, recharge. My favorite lounge time activities are reading a book or magazine, exploring the web, or maybe, watching a movie. Before heading out for a Super Bowl party (Yeah, Giants!) on Sunday, I had time for a little lounging plus web exploring. Here are three web stops I made. It’s a rather eclectic trio, meant to awe, inspire and make you laugh out loud…

DECADES OF DRESSES
It’s hard to think of fashion as art when I’m throwing on jeans and a T-shirt to do yard work. But I have to admit I feel a sense of awe when I see a woman in a wonderful outfit (either beautifully made or creatively styled or both) that is very close to the awe I feel when gazing at, say, an artwork by Cézanne. For this reason, I love the annual exhibits at the Costume Institute at the Met (this year Prada!) as well as the exhibits at the Fashion Institute of Technology, one the Big Apple’s secret treasures. If you love to look at beautiful clothes as much as I do, take a peek at OMG that dress!. This "blog for fashion and history” posts the most beautiful dresses from different periods in history, one more lovely than the next. I’ve bookmarked the page. When I’m looking for a quick fix of creative inspiration, I click on and drool. Enjoy!

STYLISH STORYTELLER
Blogger Jonathan Daniel Pryce recently wrote about Varda Ducovny, an author and psychologist of a certain age living in Paris. In Superior Interior, Behind the Street Style: Varda Ducovny, on the blog AnotherGarcon, Mr. Pryce says he admires Ms. Ducovny’s sense of style as well as her wonderful gift for storytelling. His post offers a lovely portrait--told with words, photographs and even a short video (see below)--of Ms. Ducovny. He also shares some of her stories. I see a lot written about older women becoming invisible to society. But, perhaps, we’re only invisible to those who walk around with dulled sensibilities, their noses buried in their digital devices. If so, why should we care? Bravo to Jonathan for noticing and celebrating a woman with spirit and great stories!

PARKING ETIQUETTE
And now for something not so high-minded...Do you have a Whole Foods supermarket in your area? If so, does it “get real” in the parking lot? Maybe you have to live in West LA or metro NY, but this video made my girlfriends and me howl.

This Week's Steals: A Suit, Wrap and Jacket

Are you exhausted (or is your budget exhausted) from all the January sales? If so, I understand completely! If not, you might want to take a peek at some of this week's bargains. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this Anne Klein Speckled Skirt Suit (Black), which was $280, now marked down to $89. I assumed the reduced price meant there were limited sizes. But at posting time, the suit is available in sizes 4-14.

Last fall I saw a news clip of Nancy Pelosi, age 71, looking fabulous in a white suit. It was such a refreshing change from the standard black or grey professional suit. I'm loving this Anne Klein Belted Wool Coat (White) (was $220, now $87.99) for the same reason. It's also go ta great price tag. And it's sure to take you straight into spring. Soft Separates on Sale

I’m writing to share my latest clothing discovery—Soft Surroundings. I found the fashion site over the recent three-day weekend. Perhaps, it was the harsh New York weather or the fact that life can be, well, a little harsh, but the name, Soft Surroundings, just sounded so nice and cozy. As the name suggests, there are lots of tops and bottoms in soft fabrics, like the Antigua Sweater - Blue (was $79.95, now $21.99) above (also available in balsam and orchid). I love tops with deep draping worn with a camisole. So feminine!

But what I’m really thrilled about is the large selection of unique, boutique-like styles. There are about three dozen different tunics alone on the site! And most of them look finger-tip length (that is, mid-thigh), which tends to be a great length for women over 50. There are also some great sweater designs like the Women's Paris Pullover - Brown ($98.95) below, which would look great with leggings. In general, the unique designs are moderately price. Fashion Over 50: Coat Sale

I thought you'd like to know that Jones New York is having some wild and crazy sales right now. Fashions on sale, like this Jones New York Classic Coat, are getting additional mark downs at check out. At posting time, most of the styles are available in all sizes, S-XL. I'm posting a couple of the coat styles that caught my eye, but click on any of the photos to go directly to Jones New York and see all the flattering fashions on sale.

I can vouch for this next coat because I bought it in November. I've worn it with or without the hood--I love it both ways. I like the fact that it is somewhat fitted (if you click the photo you'll see the belt element in the back), but is still roomy enough for sweaters underneath. It's a great length when I wear long sweaters. And it keeps me cozy warm when I wear skirts and tall boots. I bought the black, but I love, love the cream!

Urban Outfitters: Well-priced, Unstuffy Fashions

As I approached age 50, I began to hear my inner voice frequently lament: “You can’t wear that sort of thing anymore!” A lot of styles suddenly seemed off limits because I was getting older. Now that I’m well into my 50s, I’m happy to report I’m saying “Yes, I can” a lot more than I expected.

Sure, I want to avoid clothes that don’t flatter my body shape--but that’s always been a fashion rule. And it's a limitation that seems miniscule compared with the peer pressure that some 20-something women have to cope with. When I see a gaggle of girls dressed identically on the street, I think, “Thank goodness, I’m too old to let my friends dictate what I wear!”

Instead, I’m enjoying the challenge of creating my own personal style, trying to put together outfits that are sophisticated, yet not stuffy. Believe it or not, one store that has been a big help in achieving this goal has been Urban Outfitters. I’m not kidding. I’ve found some great, reasonably priced (if not steals!) tops and accessories that add a little edge to an outfit. Generally speaking, the clothing isn't super high quality, but it is good quality for the price. And that works for me. I like to mix higher and lower end clothing together to create my look. I think it exudes a little unpredictability. And the last thing I want to feel is pigeon-holed. My husband knows I’m an Urban Outfitter fan and bought me the sweater above for Christmas. So far, I’ve worn it belted with a straight skirt or a flirty skirt and long or ankle boots.

I got this leather backpack a few years ago. I had been looking for a bag I could use when I went into the city. I wanted something roomy enough to carry a magazine for the train, wallet, sunglasses, iPod and, perhaps, a few small purchases. But I didn't want a knapsack or a ho-hum tote bag. I saw this bag on a sales table in Urban Outfitters, marked down to…wait for it…$9. I fell in love with the price and the biker styling. Recently, I was invited to lunch at a 3-star restaurant in Manhattan. In the ladies room, a very chic-looking woman admired my bag. Too funny! Perhaps, she'd seen the ultra-thin, soft leather jackets and skirts that the high end designers were showing last fall and thought my bag was stylish. Ha!

So next time you’re in the mall and you see an Urban Outfitter, take a peek inside. You’ll probably have to hunt a little--there’s a lot that's clearly designed for nubile young things. But you might uncover a little fashion treasure to liven up an outfit. And if a sales person approaches, you can always say you’re shopping for a daughter or your son’s girlfriend (who happens to be about your size). Just don’t tell your children you like Urban Outfitters. They will be horrified, much like they are when you tell them you like one of their favorite bands.

Old Navy Dresses + Leggings = Comfortable Styling

I'm always on the lookout for dresses that can be worn over leggings or cropped pants. It's just such a fun, comfortable look. Today, I found some very reasonably-priced dresses online at Old Navy that I think would look great on over 50 women. The Old Navy Women's Dolman Top Dresses ($32.99) above has received lots of positive customer feedback, including reports that it works well with leggings. I'd love to see it styled with a long patterned scarf, leggings or cropped pants, and ankle boots. Below are a couple more Old Navy dresses that caught my eye. Two years ago, in January, I mentioned to a girlfriend that I’d just bought a cowl neck sweater, drastically reduced in an end-of-season sale. My smart shopper elation was quickly squashed when my friend responded, “Fashion is so done with cowl necks.” I shrugged and said, “Oh, well, I’m not done with them.” And the funny thing is I’m still not done with cowl necks. My sister gave me the Lauren Jeans cowl neck sweater (pictured above) for Christmas and I love it. It's so cozy and warm. If you’re a cowl neck lover, there are lots of online choices, including some currently reduced for end-of-season sales. MORE COZY COWLS
Many years ago, when the cowl neck style was first popular, there wasn’t much variety in design. Today, the cowl top folds at all different places. Some show a lot of shoulder. Others drape so low, you’ll want to wear a camisole with them. Personally, I think low-draping cowls are extremely feminine and flattering. Take a peek at Soft Joie Estee Sweater ($128) below. But, please, picture it with a straight skirt or normal jeans (rather than the skinny jeans shown--ha!).

SPRING COWLS
Are you "done" with winter and winter sales? Some online sites have introduced new cowl neck sweaters to take you into early spring. Jones New York, for instance, has a bunch of pretty styles, including the Jones New York Sleeveless Cowl Neck Sweater, ($119) below. I've gotten feedback from over 50 women who tell me they are "done" with short sleeves. And I understand completely. But I see a lot of over 50 women whose arms look fine, in my humble opinion. And when they are in a pretty sleeveless garment, I'm focused on the garment, not their arms. I think other people are, too. What do you think?

Mobile Shopping: Madness or a Must?

I admit it: Mobile devices scare me. Maybe it has to do with where I live (30 miles from New York City), but it seems like more and more people are spending every spare second on their Smart phones or mobile tablets. Everywhere I turn, someone is online on the train, while waiting for her dry cleaning, while walking down the street, when eating—with other people—in a restaurant, during a movie at the cinema, while driving a car, and so on. It doesn’t seem entirely healthy—to say the least. In my world, healthy people need unoccupied time to reflect, to look at the world around them, to make connections, to engage—things like that. That’s not easy to do when you’re on a mobile device. That said, the next time you see an over 50 woman on her mobile device in a department store, it might be me. Say what?

Yes, I intend to join the mobile shopping revolution. Here’s why: First of all, I read an interesting statistic about mobile shopping over Thanksgiving weekend and Cyber Monday in 2011 in Women’s Wear Daily. According to the WWD article, “more than one in three [mobile] purchases occurred while the shopper was in-store.” It makes sense—no waiting on long lines to pay or lugging packages around while you shop at other stores at the mall.

And mobile shopping in stores may save money. True story: In November, I was shopping for a knee-length puffy coat. Macy’s was having a 40% off sale—how could I resist! There was a great selection, but I ended up with a style by an old favorite—Jones New York. Now, I’m not sure what possessed me, but I decided to go online when I got home to see if Macy’s online site was offering the same styles and the same great deal as its store. And guess what—the exact Jones New York puffy coat was $30 less at Macy’s online. My word! Of course, the smart shopper would have turned right around and returned the store-bought coat and ordered the online version. However, the Macy’s store wasn’t around the corner for me and, well, I just didn’t. The point is, if I had consulted a mobile device while I was in Macy's, I could have conveniently compared in-store and online prices and saved $30.

Finally, today, I was relaying all this info to my digital guru, my eldest son, and he told me about a shopping app he uses. Apparently, with this shopping app, you can scan the bar code of a product while you’re in the store and your mobile device will find the same product at other stores in your area. You can then find out where the best price for the product is in your area. Amazing!

January is always a month of fabulous end-of-season sales in stores. I don’t own a Smart Phone (I’m always the last to upgrade), but my husband has an iPad. I don’t plan to leave home without it.

The book is a salute to Michelle Obama’s impeccable style as well as a potential guide for women who’d like to tweak their personal style. “I love how Obama consistently wows us with newness, while remaining true to her style and what it means to be well-dressed,” Ms. Taylor recently wrote in the HuffingtonPost. “She's teaching us that you can be price conscious and look just as elegant and moneyed as if you had spent your wad.” That got me thinking about my personal “dress code,” what defines it and how I might tweak it in 2012. Style Over 50: Great Lace Tops and Skirts

Every year, around the 15th of December, I start wondering what I'm going to wear for New Year's Eve. It's like clockwork. My gift buying is more or less complete, except for one or two things for my boys, who I have to beg to give me gift ideas (as opposed to long ago when they were little and gleefully presented their lists for Santa right after Halloween!). Coincidentally, I'm usually bombarded with store and online savings coupons the week before Christmas. It's not hard to find something special--glittery or sequined or velvety--for the final party of the year. However, these garments tend to be expensive. I don't mind splurging on something I will wear a lot, but other than New Year's Eve, I don't have much occasion for glittery. Plus, glitter after 50 can be a little tricky. I love a bit of sparkle, but too much can make any women (old or young) look like a tinseled homecoming float. (Well, maybe that's a slight exaggeration.) My easy solution for women over 50: Lovely, subtle, versatile lace tops and skirts.

Lace hits all my over 50 style goals: it's elegant, sophisticated, feminine, and flattering. With so many lace choices--tops, bottoms, dresses, scarves and more--it's hard to imagine what woman wouldn't be flattered by a little lace in her wardrobe. Moreover, lace is extremely versatile. I've had the lace skirt (above) for years and am still finding new ways to style it for special occasions. For example, I've styled my lace skirt with a Chinese-style embroidered silk top (below) from Anne Taylor for a winter evening wedding or a long charcoal sweater and leather booties for dinner with friends. My latest styling obsession is lace and leather--a lace top with a leather skirt or a leather jacket with a lace skirt. Like glitter and sequined garments, quality lace tops and bottoms can be expensive. But as the following sample shows, you'll find a range of prices online, especially if you catch them on sale.

In my last post, Dressy Tops for the Holidays, I showed a bunch of pretty, but rather clingy, party tops. Personally, I gravitate to fitted tops because the upper half of my figure is my best bit. Other over 50 women I know shy away from anything too form-fitting. These women want to draw attention to other things, like a beautiful face or long legs. That's fine as long as they don't pitch a tent over their torsos. It makes me so sad to see women over 50 opting for really baggy, shapeless clothes. I've said it before, so forgive me for saying it again: Baggy clothes just make women look heavier. So what top is flattering for women with an apple-shaped or womanly figure? Dressy tops and bottoms are a great way to stretch your party wardrobe for the month-long holiday season. When buying a holiday party top, I look for pretty blouses or sweaters that aren't super trendy. My thinking: Dressy tops tend to be more expensive and are worn much less than, say, work shirts, so I want something that will look stylish for more than one holiday season. A classic top in a luxury fabric like silk or a buttery weave like cashmere not only feels fantastic, but will make the over 50 woman look like a million. Oh, and don't forget sequin tops, like the Anne Klein Beaded Crew Neck Top, Ships 11/11 (Black) ($495) above; they're a perennial favorite at this time of year. BLACK MAGIC

Every holiday season, I exchange gifts with a small group of over 50 best girlfriends. Or for the girlfriend who already has a wardrobe to die for, how about a book or music? This holiday season, two books have caught my eye. As I mentioned in a recent post entitled Diane Keaton: She's Still Got It, I'm a huge Diane Keaton fan. If one of your girlfriend is a fan, too, you might want to consider giving her a copy of Keaton's new memoir, Then Again ($14.30, hardcover). Keaton uses her mother's journals as a springboard for reflecting on her life and her mother's. Check out a recent post about the book on the blog Over50Feeling40.

Another book that I've already picked out for a friend is 100 Unforgettable Dresses by Hal Rubenstein ($23.10, hard cover). As Bridget Foley reports in Women's Wear Daily, "Mostly this is a storybook of tales with frocks as the central characters." Rubstein agrees. "There were other beautiful and unforgettable dresses, but these had the best stories," he says. This book is for your friends who love fashion, pop culture, Hollywood icons and a writer with a sense of humor.

As for music, I'm loving The Goat Rodeo Sessions by Yo-Yo Ma, Stuart Duncan, Edgar Meyers, and Chris Thile ($11.88). As Yo-Yo recently told Steven Colbert, the CD transcends a defining music genre. Diane Keaton: She's Still Got It

I’m a huge Diane Keaton fan. So when I heard she was going to be interviewed by Jon Stewart this week, I made sure I tuned in. I was so happy to see that Keaton, 65, is still charming, smart and capable of radiating huge amounts of positive energy. She looked lovely with her mop of sandy hair, thick glasses, a high-neck sweater and long jacket. Not at all scary like some older, surgically-altered celebrities. ( I’d read she’s adamant about forgoing plastic surgery for herself, stating that she wants to look like a grandmother when she becomes one.) She was on the Daily Show to promote her new memoir, entitled Then Again. You can watch the interview below. Meanwhile, Keaton is popping up around the fashion scene as a Hollywood icon and a model for Chico's clothing.

In this month’s Elle magazine, Keaton, along with Streep and Close, kick off a list of Hollywood women who “are calling the shots.” I’ve been reading Elle since my 30s, but it’s only in the past year that I’ve noticed the editorial content featuring more and more over 50 women. Is that really true or am I just looking out for stories about women my age? The magazine notes that Keaton “has been elevating rom-coms for more than 30 years." In my mind, Keaton is like the old-time Hollywood actors—Carey Grant and Myna Loy—who play the same glorious characters in every film. My favorite Keaton films: Annie Hall, Reds, and Something’s Gotta Give. Unfortunately, there's no web link to the article; if you want to read more, you’ll have to get hold of the print version. If you do, be sure to check out the feature on Thelma Schoonmaker, 71. Schoonmaker has been editing Martin Scorsese’s feature films for 31 years.

Like most people our age, I first became aware of Keaton in Annie Hall. I had been wearing men-styled vests since junior high school (still do!), so I was ecstatic when Annie Hall made the look a fashion trend. I may be one of the few people who’ve always loved Keaton’s quirky style. I’m happy to see that she’s now modeling for Chico’s. Though she’s still a knock-out, it’s nice to see an older woman modeling current fashions. Check out her fashion video and still photos at the Chico's website.

Heel Appeal: Dressy Footwear

When I dress up, whether in a dress, a skirt or nice slacks, I like to wear heels. I'm 5'4" and I definitely appreciate the heel boost. There is, however, a limit to how high I'll go. For me, I won't step into heels higher than 2 3/4 inches. Anything higher is just plain scary. Some days, though, I get very frustrated by the limited selection of heels under 3" in the stores and online. It feels like all the best styles have heels in the 3"-5" range. With the holidays coming, I'm looking for a pair of party heels. I'm thinking I'll end up with something merry and bright like the Nina Women's Brynn Pump ($89) above. I think an indigo heel would go great with my black lace skirt. But I'm happy to report I'm seeing a lot of great mid-heels (2" to 2 3/4") this month, like the Nine West Izabela, Ships 8/16-10/11 pointed toe pump (Purple) ($79) below. Happy Hosiery: Great Quality, Great Price!

In September, I wrote a post about NY Times fashion reporter Cathy Horyn's five things for fall list. In the post, I gave my own fall wish list, which included textured stockings. Well, apparently, I’m not the only one in the market for special tights these days. Women’s Wear Daily recently reported that as of August, retail sales for sheer hosiery, tights and socks had reached $3.19 billion for 2011. Wow—that’s a lot of hosiery! “The tough economy,” reports Karyn Monget in Spring Forecast: Sheer, Bold, Colorful article (WWD, Oct. 24, 2011), is “expected to help drive continued growth next spring, as consumers seek inexpensive ways to dress up an out.” I hadn’t thought about textured stockings as a budget-minded fashion strategy, but it’s a good point. For me, I was simply looking for a way to add a little life to an outfit.

If you've looked online for textured stockings, you've probably noticed that they can be quite pricey. Frankly, hosiery isn't something I wish to spend a lot for. Holiday Flats: Put on Your Prancing Shoes

'Prance' is defined as "to walk or move about in a spirited ways,' according to Merriam-Webster. The verb came to mind as I started composing this post, because a) one of my over 50 goals is to stay active--spirited--and b) because I equate the verb with a certain famous reindeer at this time of year. Needless to say, prancing requires the right footwear. When I'm in New York City, I cringe when I see all the 20-something women prancing around in 5" heels. It's like they're walking on a tightrope, on the verge of toppling off at any moment. I love sensible heels (under 3", that is), but not for prancing. Instead, I'm going to grab a pair of flats. One of my favorite over 50 looks is a tapered, ankle-length pair of slacks, no socks or nude stockings, and a pretty pair of flats like the Calvin Klein Women's Philomena Flat ($108.95) above. Below are a few more examples of trendy metallic flats for the holidays as well as shoes in festive colors and patterns, and several classic holiday flats in velvet and suede.

During the first 15 years or so of marriage, I bought a new dress for the holiday season every year. They were a present from my mother-in-law, who wanted me to have something nice to wear to the la-dee-da Christmas dinner-dance at her country club, the annual charity dinner-dance she supported and, of course, Christmas dinner with her family. It made my mother-in-law happy to see me turned out nicely (for once!) and so I happily obliged. However, I always felt a twinge of guilt, knowing I'd probably never wear the dresses again. Generally speaking, I'm not a formal dresser. I stopped buying "holiday dresses" after my mother-in-law passed away. Since then, there's always a little black dress in my closet to shimmy into on those rare occasions when I'm invited to a fancy holiday affair. But that's me. I know some women absolutely relish the opportunity to dress up for the holidays. For them, the online stores are brimming with dresses in festive colors and with glittery embellishments. Since colors look wonderful on women over 50, I'm drawn to dresses in the trendy jewel tones, like the Jones New York Matte Jersey Dress (was $124, now $59) above. For this post, I've selected some of the different dress styles in jewel colors that I think will flatter women over 50. These aren't formal dresses for a Christmas gala, but rather pretty designs for sipping spiked eggnog at cocktail parties. JEWEL COLORS RULE

Holiday Fashions: Tempting Trousers

Halloween is barely a memory, but already I'm thinking about Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Eve. I love the holidays, but the many get-togethers with family and friends put a strain on my wardrobe, which consists largely of work clothes and yard work grubs. What will I wear for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and the parties in-between? For me, there’s only one answer: separates. In the next few weeks I’ll buy a few things to mix and match with items already in my closet. For years, I've done a little shopping at the beginning of the new season, buying a few need now items and then waited till the end of the season to do my serious shopping, when stores and online sites slash prices so they can unload inventory. If you’ve tried this strategy, you know that it has one annoying flaw: It's frustrating when you can't find your size in the item you want during the end of season mega-sales. There may be an alternative, however. That is, the mid-season sale. This week, I’ve noticed several online sites are offering pretty good sales. You might find some great bargains in your size without waiting till January and without having to get up at 2 AM on Black Friday. Take, for instance, the sweater sale at Jones New York. This morning I woke up to the sound of someone scraping ice off a car windshield. It's the day before Halloween and there's ice and a dusting of snow on the ground! Yikes. I love the white stuff, but not before November, please. Needless to say, living in a cold climate requires warm clothing. For those of us who are always cold, it requires the layering of lots of warm clothing. I know plenty of over 50 women, however, who tend to be warm even in winter and rarely wear sweaters. For them, the long sweaters I mentioned in my last post are not an option. If you're looking for something long, but lighter than a sweater to wear over leggings in winter, you might want to consider a long vest. Long Sweaters: Easy Styling Over 50

My husband and I were out at the summer house on the North Fork of Long Island last weekend, closing it up for winter (always a sad affair). The plan was to work all day, pulling in porch furniture, cleaning out the refrigerator and so forth, and then go out to our favorite local restaurant, Love Lane Kitchen in Mattituck, for dinner. I wasn't about to wear my housework grubs out to dinner, but I didn't want to fuss over what to wear either. So before we left our year-round home in the morning, I threw clean slacks, a top, and a long sweater into a bag. I love long sweaters at this time of year because they provide warmth without having to resort to a winter coat, which will be the only option in another month. Long sweaters also create a stylish, casual outfit without the fuss--you can throw them over a simple top and just about any narrow slacks, jeans or leggings.

For styling, I like a long sweater and short boots with a heel, giving my 5'4" frame a little height. I've seen some over 40 women with great legs wear a long sweater with their pants or leggings tucked into tall boots. I also like a long scarf with a long sweater. Here's a couple of online long sweaters that look like great choices for this time of year. And if you have a knee-length or longer winter coat, you'll be able to wear long sweaters all winter.

LONG SWEATER CHOICES
Is a long sweater a new look for you? There are many different styles, so I'm confident that you'll find a flattering one. I like my black one (above) because it's a little fitted on top and flares at the bottom. (I'm also a sucker for double-breasted anything.) If you're trying a long sweater for the first time, you might want to start with a well-priced version like this Nue Options Solid Ribbed Cardigan ($48) from the Beall's online store.

Fall Boots: Suede Days

I’ve had a craving for suede ever since August when I started noticing the plethora of suede shoes and boots in the fashion magazines and online. Last week, I decided to see what I could find in my size. This post features some of the suede boot styles that caught my eye while I was shopping, like the furry Report Women's Enfield Boot ($74.95) above. Man, don't they look cozy? I don’t know many over 50 women who can wear 3” or higher heels, so I've focused on boots with heels under 3” for this post.

By the way, I ended up with the Van Eli pair below. Right now, Yahoo! Shopping has these boots for a steal: regularly, $120, now $63.50.

TALL TYPES
I bought two pairs of tall boots, one black and one brown, last year and wore them constantly. I prefer skirts over pants, but hate to be cold in winter. I couldn't believe how warm my tall boots kept me. If I had the budget for a third tall pair, I would definitely go for something in suede.

Every so often I see a garment (or two) on sale that I’m desperate to tell you about. Minutes ago, I was on the Bealls Department Store site and saw these two Evan Picone blazers. Many years ago, I had a beautiful Evan Picone suit that I adored. These jackets look like great buys. The Evan Picone Basket Weave Jacket above is regularly $129, but has been reduced to $90.30. I love the round collar and the bits of color in the weave. And the Evan Picone Herringbone Lapel Suit Jacket below usually sells for $119, but is on sale for $83.30. What I love best about these jackets is that they have classic styling, which means you'll be able to wear them for a long time. Click on the photos for details. Enough said.

Poncho Power: The Cozy, Warm Alternative for Fall

Quick! What’s the difference between a poncho and a cape? And which do you think the garment above is? When I think of a poncho, I picture a large piece of fabric with an opening in the center for the head. I also think of it as a garment traditionally worn Native North and South Americans. Whereas, a cape is a garment that wraps around the body, opens down the front and fastens at the neck. I equate the cape with European culture (think: Musketeers and Matadors). So which is the outer garment above? It has an opening for the head like a poncho, but the side slits and even hem remind me of a cape. The clothing company calls it a cashmere cape. Is that what you guessed? Apparently, the fashion world is less concerned with the finer points of ponchos vs. capes, and more concerned with creating unique outwear. The result is often a lovely hybrid of the two garments.

WHY A PONCHO OR CAPE?
Ponchos and capes are great choice for true fall weather--those not-too-hot-and-not-too-cold days, when you need something cozy warm, but aren't ready for a heavy winter coat. The right poncho or cape gives the over 50 woman loads of style without a lot of effort. You can throw a poncho or cape over just about anything, and be out the door. Who knows what lurks beneath that poncho. A ratty T-shirt? A pajama top, perhaps?

Here's another garment that defies the traditional definition of a poncho. I love the cowl neck.

STYLING THE PONCHO OR CAPE
The last thing I want is a poncho that looks like a tent or mushroom cap. Instead, I like the knitted ponchos and capes that drape over the body, hanging close to the frame. I also gravitate towards a garment with a pointy hem rather than a straight hem all around. A long hem point in front makes my silhouette look longer, slimmer. A stylish fall poncho or cape like the one below can take you from the Saturday afternoon football game to dinner with friends at a nice restaurant.

And don’t forget the bulk distribution rule: If the garment you wear on top is bulky or loose, keep your bottom-half structured. In other words, a loose poncho or cape should be paired with a straight skirt, straight pants or jeans, or leggings.

Not convinced that a poncho or cape is right for you? You might want to experiment with a reasonably-priced, pretty shawl first. Unlike a poncho and cape, which are hands-free, you might have to adjust the shawl now and then to keep it from falling off your shoulders. Still, it's a cozy, stylish alternative.

Holiday Tops: Marvelous Metallics

This weekend I started phoning family members, immediate and extended, to find out their plans for the holidays--Thanksgiving and Christmas. "But it's only Columbus Day!" you wisely point out. I know, I know. Like most families, ours keeps growing. These years, it takes till mid-November to get everyone to declare their holiday plans. I made a few phone calls to get the process started. If I didn't know better, I'd say the phone calls have put me in a holiday mood, because I'm suddenly noticing lots of lovely party tops online, like the Anne Klein Sleeveless Cross Drape Blouse, Ships 11/11 (Blue) ($275) at the top of this post. Low draped blouses are some of my favorite tops for women over 50. They're so sexy and sophisticated. I'm also loving the tops, tunics and jackets with trendy metallic styling this season. I’ve only had time to read a few of the posts. In her predictably upbeat welcoming post, Rita Wilson suggests that “our parents were winding down at middle age; we are winding up” and “for us, there's so much to do, so little time.” It looks like she’s drawn some criticism in the post’s comments from people who are over 50 and having a tough time. My feeling: Life is tough—we all have stories. But if you let it defeat you, what’s left?

I also checked out To Thine Own Self be True—And other Eternal Truths because it’s written by Christiane Amanpour. I saw Christiane speak at the More Magazine “Reinvention Convention” last fall and thought she was fabulous—smart, good humored, realistic. I like her rambling post, especially when she says, “Make sure to maintain the purpose and sense of mission. That is an eternal truth, but the older I get, the more urgent it becomes.” She's talking about her career, but it’s the philosophy that guides everything in my life. These days, an important mission for me is to slow down the “hands of time” by trying to make each day somehow a little unique. It’s usually not huge—the week before last, my parents and I took wine and cheese to the beach and watched the sunset; I can’t tell you the last time I did that—just something that will make that day a little more memorable, different from the day before.

Finally, I had to check out 10 Tips for Bloggers Over 50 by Carolyn Esply-Miller. Carolyn writes a lifestyle blog called Slim Paley. It has gorgeous photography—check it out. Unfortunately, if you’re an over 50 blogger looking for sage advice, you won’t find it in this “10 Tips” post. The post is very cute, but not particularly informative.

Anyway.

It's always nice to see new interest in over 50 women. I plan to bookmark this site and check in every so often to see what’s up.

Style Over 50: Revved on Reptile Belts and Scarves

I got this picture message from my husband this weekend. He bumped into this handsome fellow (madame?) while communing with Nature. I had to laugh; I hadn't told my husband I was blogging about reptile prints in a big way lately. This is the fourth (and final, I promise) installment of my animal prints for women over 50. Style Tips from Over 50 Tastemakers

Yesterday, I was in the beauty parlor (I just love that old-fashion term) and picked up the October issue of InStyle. I was very happy to see that an article, entitled Super Stylish, about "10 top tastemakers” included two women over 50: Vera Wang, 62, and Lauren Hutton, 68. It’s another example of the fashion world recognizing the mature woman. (I blogged about this topic yesterday in Over 50 Fashion Role Models: A Change in the Air?) The InStyle article's writer, Sarah Z. Wexler, asked each woman to talk about her style POV. Interestingly, both woman believe that a statement necklace (“to wear with a T-shirt or cocktail dress,” says Wang) is an important accessory. I couldn’t find a link to the article to share with you, unfortunately. You’ll have to find a hard copy of the issue. In the meantime, here are a few of my favorite style tips from each woman…

FLATTER YOUR BODY SHAPE
Two style tips from Vera Wang really resonated with me. The first: “Embrace yourself and your body shape.” I love to incorporate a few of the trends each season, but only if they flatter my body shape. By the by, I recently found two InStyle slideshows that might help you to figure out which flattering dress styles and flattering coat styles are best for your body shape.

INVEST IN ROCKIN' SHOES
The other thing Vera recommends is getting a pair of “shoes that rock.” The right pair of boots or shoes “can change your attitude about everything else you have on,” she said. Personally, I'm loving all the suede styles this fall. Unfortunately, a lot of the rockin' fall styles have 3 inch or higher heels. Too high for me. Consequently, I fancy these Sam Edelman Petty Suede Booties($160). The boot comes in black, putty or moss green. I'm lovin' the moss green, though...

ATTACK YOUR CLOSET
Lauren Hutton also offers two style tips I need to be reminded of. She advises women to “thin out your closet. When it’s overstuffed, you miss the good pieces.” Maybe because I’m planning to change over my closet today, switching my spring/summer clothes with my fall/winter clothes currently sequestered in my attic, but I've been thinking about how important it is to re-organize your wardrobe at least twice a year. Years of switching seasonal clothes has taught me 2 things: 1) there are always things I’ve totally forgotten about (often a skirt or top I bought on sale at the end of the last season and never wore) and 2) there’s always a garment or two in the attic that is suddenly in vogue again. And I love to recycle old favorites back into my wardrobe! Case in point: I’ve got an ancient Rena Rowen blazer, Ann Taylor top and A-line skirt all with this seaon’s trendy houndstooth pattern.

MIX IT UP
The other tip I loved from Lauren is: Mix cheaper faddish stuff in with more expensive apparel. “I wouldn’t be caught dead in an all-expensive outfit,” she confesses. As someone on a strict fashion budget, this is advice I live by. I buy the most expensive sweaters, coats and blazers I can afford. These are the pieces people notice and well-made items pay off by lasting for years. (I’ve tried cheap sweaters and they just don’t work.) I also buy high-priced (for me) classic handbags, but cheap trendy clutches. And I save money by going cheap on all-cotton T-shirts and underwear. They’re pieces that are going to have to be replace frequently, so I’m not going to spend a lot on them. And, lastly, I look for trendy blouses, dresses and shoes on sale, so I can buy well-made without paying high prices.

Over 50 Fashion Role Models: A Change in the Air?

I admit to spending way too much time combing the fashion sources—Women’s Wear Daily, The New York Times Style section, other fashion blogs, and the doorstop-size September issues of all the fashion magazines—in recent weeks. I was curious about fashion’s buzz for the fall season. While my basic style, like my basic personality, has not changed tremendously in the past 40 years or so, there’s nothing I hate more than total stagnation. I’m always on the lookout for a fresh fashion idea to infuse into my style. The New York City streets and the editorial fashion buzz are where I find inspiration. Naturally, being an over 50 woman, my eyes gravitate to fashion being worn by women my age. And based on my recent reading, there seem to be signs of the fashion world finally waking up (at least opening one eye) to the fact that women over 50 are an important audience. Here’s a couple of examples:

OVER 50 CELEBRITIES MODELS
A few weeks ago, Women’s Wear Daily reported that Uniqlo has enlisted Susan Sarandon, 64, to model the company’s clothing. According to the article, Uniqlo Tapes Diverse Celebs for Fall Campaign, Sarandon has been chosen as part of the clothier’s “Made for all” campaign. When it comes to fashion, Sarandon says, “I hold onto things.” In my mind, that’s the beauty of 1) not being a slave to fashion and 2) buying well-made garments you absolutely adore. If you buy good quality things that suit your personal style, you can put them away when you’re tired of them and recycle into your wardrobe down the road. I also like the eco-mindedness of it. I'm trying to buy things that last longer, rather than lots of cheap stuff that has to be tossed at the end of the season.

Also, I reported last spring that the Talbots’ catalog featured a bunch of older women with varying body shapes. This fall, beautiful Julianna Moore, 51, is all over the place, modeling Talbots fashions this fall. Okay, not exactly someone I can readily identify with, but it’s a step in the right direction. But more importantly, the Talbots website has non-waif 20-something women modeling fall sweaters line in a section called Shop Real Women. It’s not a huge section, but there are a few over 40 women in the group.

STREET INSPIRATION
Finally, and actually what inspired me to sit down and write this post, if you haven’t check out the blog Advanced Style, I highly recommend you do. Spoiler alert: It will put you in a great mood. This week, the New York Times Style section featured the blog’s author, Ari Seth Cohen, in If Holly Golightly Had a Grandson. I hadn’t been on the blog in a few months and I was glad to be reminded of it. If you can’t get to New York City, stop by this blog from time to time. There are incredible older women everywhere, but New York does have a lot of them. Ari’s mom must be so proud of him.

Styling Over 50: Animal Print Tops

Have you felt the call of the wild animal prints that are oh so fashionable again this season? For some time, I’ve wrestled with my instincts for animal print fashions. I worried that a leopard and zebra print, for example, might not flatter me, an over 50 woman. However, my comfort level has grown as I’ve seen more and more women over 50 on the street mixing animal prints into their look with great success. Their secret: pairing an animal print garment or accessory with solid pieces that pick up the shades from the print. It’s all about incorporating a bit of the wild without going "hog wild," if you will.

Take, for instance, the outfit from Pure Collection at the top of this post. I'm always looking for great weekend looks and this one is perfect for shaking off the work week. Fall Fashion Over 50: Vive la Différence

Fashion magazines love to report the season’s “trends.” It’s just easier than trying to cover the entire fashion “waterfront,” if you will, which is always changing. At least, that’s what I find as a blogger. However, every time there's a Fashion Week in New York (the one for the spring 2012 collections just ended), I'm reminded that it’s probably a disservice to readers to only report the trends. During any season, there's always so much variety. Last February, when designers unveiled their fall 2011 collection, I saw certain design elements repeated in different designers' collections. But I also saw wonderful design diversity. And now, with the cooler weather approaching, I can't wait to see how women will take those fall fashions and make them their own. It's really the diversity of fashion that I love most and think should be heralded, should be celebrated as much as possible. It's the diversity that enables the over 50 woman to find clothes that match her personal style and make her feel like a million bucks.

Recently, in an article entitled The Five Things You Need for Fall, New York Times fashion reporter Cathy Horyn, age 56, shared her fashion shopping list for fall 2011 as well as the wish lists of several other fashionable women. I was happy to read all the women had different ideas about what would complete their fall wardrobes. Their ideas were fashionable, yet individual. Ms. Horyn’s list consisted of:

It made me think: What would I choose as my five must-have items for fall? Clearly, my list would not look like Ms. Horyn's. For one thing, Ms. Horyn and I are operating with very different budgets. I estimate the above shopping list will set her back over $3,000. If I spent $3000 for fall, I'd have a boatload of clothing to show for it. Instead, my list would look like this...

THE 5 THINGS I'M LOOKING FOR THIS FALL

#1 Double-breasted Wool Jacket
A short jacket, like a P-coat, will be a lifesaver in a season of falling hemlines. When I’m shopping for a skirt or dress, I don’t want to worry: “How will this hemline look under my knee-length winter coat?” I can wear any hem length with a jacket like this Double-Breasted-Jacket (was $324, now $259.20) from Pure Collection.

#2 Suede booties
I’ve always loved suede shoes and boots. The fact that suede is au courant this season means there will be a lot of styles to choose from. Shoe Season: New Looks for Fall 2011

I think it's safe to say that the vast majority of women love shoes. Some gals may be indifferent to footwear and others may hate the accessory. But those women are probably the exceptions. I won't pretend to know all the reasons for this woman-shoe love affair. But if I were forced to guess, I might suggest 1) women can be more adventurous with their shoe styles than, say, a top or bottom, 2) a smashing pair of shoes can breathe life into an otherwise ho-hum outfit, and 3) shoe styles don’t care if a woman has put on a pound or two with menopause. That said, after looking at the fall fashion magazines with a plethora of 3" and 5" heels, I felt myself falling out of love with shoes. (For a quick look, click on 20 Chic Shoes for Fall. Yikes!) But the truth is, there’s plenty of shoe variety this season. In fact, not only do the shoe styles reflect the season’s many trends—bold colors, menswear styling, metallic accents and more—but I’m seeing lots of fun flats and stylish low heels for women over 50. Fashion After 50: The Classic Coat

You don't have to be an anglophile or a monarch watcher to know that Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, is quickly becoming an international fashion trend setter. There was quite a ta-do made of her Alexander McQueen wedding dress last spring as well as her wardrobe during the Duke and Duchess's recent North American tour. She is being admired for her clothing's simple lines and sophistication. This week, the New York Times reported in an article entitled Are the 'RepliKates' Ready to March? that we'll be seeing the effect of her "timeless" styling in clothing designs for Spring 2011. This is great news for women over 50 who are looking for simple, sophisticated fashions because there will be more choices in stores and online. I'm not sure if it's the so-called "Kate Effect" or fashion's focus on vintage styling right now, but I'm seeing a lot of classic coat designs online. Tailored wool coats, fur-trimmed coats, brightly colored as well as neutral colored coats, and classic double-breasted coats are all the rage. Below is a sample of flattering coats for over 50 women.

Type “Iris Apfel” into Google and you’ll find almost 2 million entries. The fashion icon, famous for her saucer-size eyeglasses, has turned 90 and is more popular than ever, according to a recent NY Times article entitled At 90, Fashions Latest Pop Star. This month, Mrs. Apfel will be selling accessories of her own design on Home Shopping Network. Famous for her highly individualized style, Mrs. Apfel is a wonderful role model for women over 50 who are finding their own personal style. ARE MEN MORE ROMANTIC?
Interestingly, Mrs. Apfel reports that straight men are among her fans. “They are so much more romantic than women,” she explains and adds that they seem to share her view that “there is not enough glamor in the world.” It was the second time in a week that I’d come across the opinion that men are more romantic than women. During a recent viewing of the movie Blue Valentine, the Ryan Gosling character say the same thing. My knee-jerk reaction is always to object to such gross generalizations. However, the connection made between romance and glamor interests me. I would have to say my husband expresses his romantic side by giving me glamorous gifts—beautiful watches, clothes, and a little something from Tiffany’s on our anniversary. I’ve tried to reciprocate over the years, but I’m a little too practical to match his outpouring. For me, romance is about those things that money can’t buy, like the bond between a man and woman, being attentive to each other’s needs, keeping each other safe and loved, helping each other grow. It’s not that I think I’m more romantic than my husband or vice versa—it’s just (like so many other things) a different take on romance.
